Alanine

L-Alanine represents the L-form of the amino acid with the name alanine. It plays an essential role as an inhibitor of a certain enzyme, called diaminopropionate ammonia-lyase, and is also one of the key metabolites in the human body.
Alanine is a non-essential amino acid that is utilized in the body for healthy skin. It is an amino constituent of some of the very important skin proteins, including collagen and elastin, which give skin its strength and elasticity. These proteins are important in keeping the skin firm and smooth and generally in giving the skin a young appearance.
In addition to its structural role, alanine is a component of the skin's NMF, ensuring proper hydration. It plays an active role in attracting and retaining water within the skin, helping a great deal with skin hydration, making it soft and supple. This retention will go a long way to help maintain skin barrier integrity and keep off such conditions as dryness or irritation.
Alanine also forms part of the skin's Natural Moisturizing Factor, or NMF-a group of naturally occurring compounds in the outermost layer of the skin, the stratum corneum, which acts to maintain hydration and protect against environmental stressors. With alanine supporting the structural and moisturizing needs of the skin, it is an active ingredient of value in skincare products for hydration, elasticity, and general skin health.
