Cetyl Alcohol

Hexadecan-1-ol, more commonly called cetyl alcohol, is a multi-purpose long-chain fatty alcohol with a chain of 16 carbons and carrying at its first carbon an hydroxy group (-OH). Unlike simple, short-chain alcohols, cetyl alcohol is a kind of fatty alcohol that doesn't dry but instead benefits the skin through the formation of a protecting layer which helps to seal in moisture. Generally, cetyl alcohol serves many purposes in skincare formulations, including as an emollient that makes the skin soft and smooth, a thickener which imparts richness to creams and lotions, and an emulsifier that keeps a combination of oil and water from separating.
Primarily derived from renewable plant sources such as coconut and palm kernel oil, cetyl alcohol is a natural ingredient and is biodegradable. Its large carbon chain gives it a waxy nature, solid at room temperature, and contributes to viscosity without leaving any type of greasiness in formulations. Further to cosmetic applications, cetyl alcohol is a metabolite in both humans and in plants and algae, increasing its compatibility and safety for use topically. This ingredient is highly valued for its mild and non-irritating features, which can be safely used even on sensitive skin. Its multifunctionality and gentle nature have given cetyl alcohol a secure position in skin care and personal care formulations, wherein it amplifies stability, sensory feel, and effectiveness of delivering moisture to the product.
