Dimethicone

Dimethicone is a versatile skin care ingredient that exerts several main uses, such as oil control by absorption of excess sebum, improvement in smoothness, and provides a gel-like elastomer feel to formulations. The chemical nature of this material is a hybrid elastomer powder that contains two interlacing polymer networks, formed from the cross-polymerization of dimethicone, divinyldimethicone, and silsesquioxane monomers. Dimethicone ranges from very light and watery to thick and gel-like, given its range in molecular weights and viscosities. This special composition improves the texture and performance of cosmetic products by intensifying it. In skincare, dimethicone is a prized ingredient as it leaves behind a silky, smooth texture, adding to the luxurious feel of a product.
It also forms a subtle gloss on the skin, building an occlusive barrier to help lock in moisture. This occlusive barrier serves to hydrate but also to smooth out the skin, temporarily helping to plump up small lines and wrinkles for a more youthful look. Also, scar treatment gels cannot do without dimethicone, because this active softens scars and increases their elasticity, contributing to better-appearing skin and healing. With all these properties, in many cosmetic formulations, the base turns into dimethicone, improving performance and increasing user experience.
