Lactic Acid

Lactic acid is an alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) that naturally occurs and has gained widespread use in skincare because of its skin exfoliating, hydrating, and pH-regulating properties. Derived from milk or fermented plant sugars, lactic acid causes the dissolution of certain bonds that hold dead skin cells together, thus enabling gentle removal and promoting a smoother and brighter complexion. Its humectant properties attract and retain moisture, thus enhancing hydration of the skin. Lactic acid also promotes good skin tone and texture, encouraging collagen production, hence its common inclusion in anti-aging products. It is suitable for most skin types and is usually used in concentrations made to achieve certain benefits with minimal irritation.
