Phenylalanine
An essential amino acid
Functions: Skin hydrating, anti-aging

Phenylalanine is an amino acid described as essential since it must be ingested through the diet in great part, by the consumption of proteins. It plays a general role in protein synthesis in the body and a more particular one in the synthesis of certain important molecules like neurotransmitters, including dopamine and norepinephrine. In skincare, phenylalanine is best known for treating vitiligo, a disorder wherein the skin loses certain areas of color. The amino acid treatment involving phenylalanine can be stimulated, along with UVA light, to produce melanin, which is responsible for skin color, as a way to re-pigment those areas. The ability of this amino acid to promote melanin production renders it useful in treatments that work toward evening out skin tone. Beyond that, phenylalanine participates in protein synthesis and thus is suspected to contribute to overall skin health by underpinning the structure and repair of skin tissue. While its main study is for its inclusion in the treatment of disorders of pigmentation, its inclusion in skincare formulations may state its potential benefits for overall skin tone health.
