Polysorbate 20

A mild and non-irritating ingredient
Functions: Emulsifying, surfactant

Polysorbate 20

Polysorbate 20 is one of the most widely used emulsifiers in cosmetic formulations. The reason this ingredient is in such high demand is its ability to combine water and oil components, which otherwise could not mix. This surfactant, polysorbate 20, reduces the surface tension between these two phases, enabling the formation of stable emulsions. This property is very important in products like lotions, creams, and cleansers, where a smooth and homogeneous texture is necessary for effectiveness and user experience.
Derived from sorbitol, which is a type of sugar alcohol, and modified with lauric acid fatty acids-hence the name, this commonly occurs in coconut oil/polysorbate 20. It is thought to be a mild and non-irritating ingredient; hence, it is suitable for many skin types, including even the most sensitive ones. The emulsifier does not only mix the oil and water, but it increases the solubility of other agents that are poorly water-soluble in aqueous preparations. The addition of polysorbate 20 is important to their solubilization to maintain them uniformly distributed within the product for maintaining homogeneity and the effectiveness of the formulation during some time.
Besides emulsifying and solubilizing properties, polysorbate 20 can take part in the sensory properties of skincare products, helping to create formulas that feel smooth and light on the skin, non-greasy, or heavy, which is a particular advantage for leave-on products like moisturizers or serums.
