Sodium Lactate

Sodium lactate is a naturally occurring humectant and the sodium salt of lactic acid. It is an excellent humectant that efficiently hydrates the skin. Sodium lactate attracts moisture and locks it in. It acts similarly to an effective moisturizer, helping in restoring skin elasticity and suppleness. Besides its moisturizing properties, the use of sodium lactate is also in common use as a pH controller of cosmetic formulation. It performs a pH-balancing action on products to keep skincare formulations in their neutral pH, therefore gentle yet effective. It enhances stability and performance. Sodium lactate is considered to be a natural and fully biocompatible ingredient because it is derived from sugar fermentation; hence, its popularity in formulation for sensitive skin or dry skin. In fact, this is due to the fact that it participates simultaneously in processes of hydration and pH regulation, making it a very valuable multifunctional active in the large group of cosmetic skincare products: creams, serums, and lotions. Moreover, sodium lactate has a pretty high value of WHC, so such long-term hydration will result in improved skin smoothness.
