Sorbic Acid

Sorbic acid is a very gentle, natural preservative which finds its wide applications both in the cosmetic and food industries. The purpose of this ingredient in skin care products is basically to impede mold and yeast growth and to keep the product stable and safe for a longer period. It sometimes comes in combination with other preservatives like benzoic acid or dehydroacetic acid to give wider protection. Being a mild compound itself, it is also considered suitable for sensitive skin and hence finds applications in formulations which try to avoid harder chemical preservatives. Similar is the principle of action of sorbic acid in extending shelf-life in food preservation, and it grows through the inhibition of microbes.
